IN PRAISE OF DANGLING PARTICIPLES.
HERE IS ONE:
“HAVING 5 KIDS AND ONE ON THE WAY, THE IRONING BOARD WAS ALWAYS UP.”
What the above sentence actually says is that the ironing board had kids. The sentence contains a “dangler”.
Of course you want to communicate in the right kind of way. But… I’m here to tell you… it’s the response you get… that is what good advertising copy is all about.
IF you speak and write grammatically correct… and no one buys your product or service… screw that.
I’ve made a lot of money for myself and my advertising clients from TYPOS. And non-sequators (sp?)
In fact, we made a lot of money off of one mailing package that had page 4 and page 5 printed on the wrong side of the page.
Millions of the mistaken mailing packages were mailed out. Profits and responses came rolling in.
When the mistake was noticed and corrected…by an office worker… response rates fell dramatically.
I DON’T LOVE DANGLING PARTICIPLES.
BUT I do love high response rates to my marketing campaigns.
Give me the chance to dangle your participles.
